Hesai was founded in 2013 in Silicon Valley. In 2014, Hesai relocated to Shanghai. We focus on developing smart sensing solutions for autonomous cars and natural gas leak detection system.
Hesai thrives on an amazing team from prestigious universities domestically and internationally, such as Stanford University, Tsinghua University, SJTU (Shanghai Jiao Tong University), Zhejiang University, etc. We have also attracted employees from established companies and institutions including Apple, Carl Zeiss, Western Digital, United Imaging, Tektronix, SIOM (Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics), SITP (Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), and Institute of Semiconductors, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Hesai has 16 PhDs, including one National Thousand Talent and one Shanghai Thousand Talent. Currently, we have 112 employees in total.
Chairman, Chief Scientist, Thousand Talents Expert
Dr. Sun obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering and PhD minor in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 2013. His advisor at Stanford was Professor Ronald K. Hanson (a member of national academy of engineering), a leading researcher in laser based optical sensors. Dr. Sun's primary research interests are to develop laser-based absorption sensor for gas-phased species monitoring and low-cost LiDAR system. He has published more than 20 journal and conference papers, among which some were selected to IOP Select (Institute of Physics in UK)，“100 Years of Combustion Kinetics at Argonne”, Spotlight of OSA (Optical Society of America). He also obtained Outstanding Paper Award in the journal "Measurement Science and Technology" in 2013. Dr. Sun is a member of the “1000 Talents Program” in China and is appointed as a full professor in the department of Automotive Engineering at Tongji University.
Dr. Yifan 'David' Li receives his PhD in Robotics from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and BS Degree from Tsinghua University. Prior to founding Hesai, Dr. Li served as the principal engineer at Western Digital Corporation in Silicon Valley, specializing in high speed high precision disk head motion control. Dr. Li has received multiple awards including World Economic Forum Global Shaper, CYZone 30 by 30, Shanghai's Thousand Talents Plan, etc. In his spare time, he enjoys basketball, triathlon, and photography. His online travel blog exceeded tens of millions of visits on Renren.com. He is also an electronics hobbyist, and his most memorable project to date is a mechatronic diamond he designed when proposed to his wife several years ago.
Shaoqing Xiang obtained his bachelor's degree from Tsinghua University (Beijing, China) in 2003, ranking 1st in the Department of Precision Instruments. He received fellowship award and obtained dual Masters Degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering from Stanford University (California, USA). Before co-founding Hesai, Mr. Xiang worked at Apple, Inc (Cupertino, California) as an iPhone Hardware Systems Integration Engineer. His work at Apple includes next generation iPhone circuit design, iPhone prototype development, and overseas manufacturing/testing line bring-up. In his spare time, Shaoqing Xiang loves building and collecting models, and his passion for engineering was largely inspired by this hobby since childhood.
